HIST 07F25 - Two Tall Texans: Sam Houston and O. Henry
Course Description
Two Tall Texans: Sam Houston and O. Henry (Seriously)
It’s hard to imagine two more contrasting Texans than Sam Houston and O. Henry. The only thing they had in common is they got here as quickly as they could. Sam Houston arrived as the Texas independence movement was gathering steam. He rose to prominence as a military general, president, senator and governor of Texas. He opposed secession from the Union and was shunned by a Confederate-leaning Texas. What about William Sydney Porter, pen name O. Henry, that good old Texas boy? Yep, before becoming one of the most popular American writers, he spent 16 years in Texas (not all of them terribly legal) developing his witty storytelling skills before moving on to New York. His Texas exploits included cattle ranching, banking, technical drawing, publishing and a prison sentence. We’ll learn how he drew ideas and inspiration from the landscapes and characters of the Lone Star State.
