Course Description

The Crusades – A Broader Perspective

Covering between 613 CE when Mohammad begins preaching in Mecca to 1453/1492 CE, the Fall of Byzantium and Reconquista respectively, the course will concentrate on the 200 years of conflict in the Holy Land and the various internal European crusades, including those against Orthodox areas, and why the Western basis of interest in the Holy Land changed over 500 years ago.

Brian de la Houssaye has been a lifelong student of history and something of a policy wonk, finding that history enlightens us by exposing the origins of our beliefs, prejudices, myths and aspirations, both individually and as people.  He is retired, having spent his career in international agricultural marketing and corporate finance. Prior courses include histories of the horse, sailing and western Indians.
