She’s Been Working on the Railroad: Women of Steel, Rails of Change (1860’s-Today)

This presentation highlights the essential contributions of women in the American railroad industry from the Civil War to the present day.  Women have played key roles from telegraph operators and clerks to locomotive maintenance and operations, helping to keep trains, and troops moving.  Today, they lead major railroad corporations as executive officers, mentoring the next generation and continuing to shape the future of rail transportation.

Instructor:  Melissa Johnson

 

Melissa Johnson is a full-time faculty member of the History Department at Collin College.  Johnson earned her B.S. and M.A. from Texas Woman’s University, specializing in 19th Century American and Industrial history.  She worked for the Museum of the American Railroad for many years, where she first began researching the Pullman Company.
