Course Description

This course traces the evolution of U.S. engagement in the Middle East from the aftermath of World War I through the final years of the Cold War. Topics include the rise of Zionism, the creation of Israel, the Suez Crisis, the Iranian Revolution, and the 1982 Lebanon intervention. Through an examination of strategic interests, ideological goals, and cultural perceptions, participants will explore the tension between American idealism and realpolitik and gain insight into how historical decisions continue to shape U.S.–Middle East relations today.
