Course Description

This course will explore earthquake fundamentals. We’ll cover types of faults and what is special about each, discuss what is meant by “magnitude” and why it matters, think about how energy from an earthquake travels, and more! There’s always time for questions in a discussion about earthquakes, so be sure to bring yours!

Katherine Hedberg is a geotechnical engineer, specializing in seismic design and earthquake engineering.  She has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in civil engineering with a focus on geotechnical earthquake engineering and loves talking about earthquakes!  As a consulting engineer, she has worked on domestic and international projects in seismically active regions, including New Zealand and California.  She is currently working as a professor at Collin College.
