PLAB 1023 - Phlebotomy
Course Description
Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessioning, professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. Lab required.Notes
The CE Phlebotomy Technician program requires a special admissions process.
The CE Phlebotomy Technician program includes the completion of the following courses: HPRS 2010, PLAB 1023, and PLAB 1060.
SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Admission to the Health Professions clinical programs is selective and requires completion of an application process. The application is found on the Health Professions program website: https://www.collin.edu/department/healthprofessions and must be submitted and approved prior to enrolling in the clinical program courses. Eligibility requirements for application to the Health Professions clinical programs include:
- Complete the Health Professions Application form (located on the Health Professions department website). https://www.collin.edu/department/healthprofessions
- Submit all clinical program requirements:
- Proof of personal health insurance
- Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Provider card
- Required immunization records (submitted to the required immunization tracker)
- Varicella (completed 2-dose series or positive quantitative blood titer)
- Hepatitis B (completed 3-dose series, 2-dose accelerated series, or positive quantitative blood titer)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) (completed 2-dose series or positive quantitative blood titer)
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDaP) dated within the last ten years.
- Negative Tuberculosis (TB) screening (expires annually)
- Influenza vaccine (required during active flu season, expires annually)
- Background check (this item is purchased in conjunction with the immunization tracker)
- Drug Screening purchase (performed for each clinical course)
