Course Description

An introduction to watercolor painting, with an emphasis on hands-on class exercises under instructor guidance. Learn to use the basic tools of watercolor to complete paintings of landscapes, simple buildings, and still-life compositions. Basic rules of design and composition will be emphasized, as well as basic sketching techniques of subject matter. Regardless of previous watercolor experience, you will learn at your own pace through one-on-one instruction during the hands-on period of each class. Both beginning and intermediate students are encouraged to enroll.

Paint (Tubes preferred):

  • Cobalt Blue
  • Antwerp
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Permanent Rose
  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • New Gamboge
  • Cadmium Orange
  • Yellow Green (Van Gogh) or Thalo Yellow Green
  • Payne's Grey
  • Student grade is fine

Additional Supplies:

  • Container to hold water (e.g., Cool Whip container)
  • Natural sponge
  • Toothbrush
  • Palette large enough to hold at least 12 paints and includes a mixing area
  • Sketchbook, any size you prefer
  • #2 pencil
  • Art eraser
  • Salt shaker with salt
  • Spray bottle

Brushes (Buy a good grade if possible):

  • 1 1/2" flat brush (used as a wash brush)
  • #8 round brush
  • 1/2" flat brush
  • #5 round brush
  • #4, #5, or #6 rigger or script brush

Paper:

  • 140# cold press
  • I recommend D'Arches, but you can try others
